Bio-identical hormones are substances that are manufactured from natural (often plant) sources to be structurally identical to those substances our bodies produce naturally. Synthetic hormones, on the contrary, are substances created by pharmaceutical companies to resemble our own hormones but are structurally different enough from our own hormones to be patentable. These synthetic hormones produce some or many of the desirable effects of our own hormones but, unfortunately, often have negative side effects because they have not evolved along with the rest of our body chemistry-they are foreign substances. These side effects can range from mild such as weight gain and fatigue to more serious like cancer. Bio-identical hormones, though, being identical to the hormones our bodies produce have all the positive effects of our own hormones without the negative side effects of the synthetics.
