DHEA or Dehydroepiandrosterone is the most abundant hormone in the body. DHEA is produced in the adrenal glands, skin and brain. Along with being a precursor hormone in the production of other hormones it is a vital ingredient in many of the metabolic functions of the body. DHEA helps balance the other hormones and is important in fighting the effects of stress. In addition, it promotes the breakdown of fat and thus helps reduce body fat especially in the abdominal area. It is also a muscle builder, being important in the production of protein, essential for building muscle. Low levels of DHEA have been linked to heart disease and impaired sexual vigor. There is some evidence that DHEA helps prevent cancer.
